A selection of photographers who live, or have lived, and worked in South Florida, chosen for the way their work engages migration, memory, identity and the life of our communities. Each entry is researched, sourced and approved by the artist or their estate.

About this selection

What it is. Artists is a curated selection, not a complete list. SoFLaFoto chooses each photographer and publishes the principles behind those choices, so readers can judge the selection for themselves. We give particular attention to photographers whose work risks being forgotten, and to studio, press and vernacular photography that museums and markets have overlooked.

Who is eligible. Photographers of Latin American or Caribbean origin or descent, as they describe themselves, who have lived and worked in South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach County) for at least five years at any point in their lives, with a sustained photographic practice and a public record that can be verified. A single exhibition or a presence on social media is not enough. Meeting these conditions makes a photographer eligible; it does not guarantee inclusion.

How photographers are selected. SoFLaFoto weighs the relevance and consistency of the work, how it engages migration, memory, identity and the life of our communities, its contribution to the photographic history of South Florida, and the risk of it being forgotten. Inclusion is never paid for.

Board members. Members of SoFLaFoto's board are included under the same criteria as any photographer. Their entries are reviewed by an independent reader outside the board and state their role in SoFLaFoto.

Nominations. We welcome nominations, including your own, through our Contact page. A nomination is not a promise of inclusion.

Accuracy and maintenance

Sources and consent. Every entry is researched and sourced, and approved by the living artist or by their estate. Dates and places are verified before publication; what cannot be confirmed is marked as such.

Corrections. If an entry is incomplete or incorrect, please write to us. Entries are updated when new information is verified, and each shows when it was last updated.

Annual review. Every January SoFLaFoto reviews the selection, asks living artists whether their entries need updating, and checks every entry for accuracy.
